A Folk Victorian, Reimagined

"Every old home has a story. This is the story of how one home transformed not only our lives, but the way I think about design."

The Chronicle

When my husband and I purchased this 1890 Folk Victorian cottage in Benicia's Historic District, I thought we were beginning a home renovation.

I had no idea we were beginning a journey.

Like many people, I admired historic homes for their charm and craftsmanship, but I couldn't have explained the difference between a Victorian and a Folk Victorian. I didn't know the names of the architectural details that gave these homes their distinctive character, nor did I fully appreciate the responsibility that comes with restoring a piece of history.

That changed almost immediately.

Honoring the Past, Designing for Today

As every wall was opened, every architectural detail uncovered, and every decision carefully considered, this home began teaching me important lessons. I learned, not only about construction and historic preservation, but about thoughtful design, patience, and seeing beauty in the details that most people overlook.

What began as a renovation slowly became something much more meaningful.

It is becoming the foundation for Splurge Smart Designs.

Along the way, I discovered that great design isn't simply about creating beautiful spaces. It's about understanding how a home was built, respecting the craftsmanship that came before us, and making intentional decisions that allow it to serve another generation without losing the character that makes it special.
